Kent Peg Tile Roofing
Kent peg tiling is our core specialism and has been since 1984. The Kent peg tile is a hand-pressed clay tile, named for the wooden pegs used to hang each tile from the roofing lath, and laid in a double-lap arrangement that gives Wealden roofs their characteristic undulating surface and excellent weather resistance.Working correctly with peg tiles takes specific knowledge and experience. Pre-Victorian roofs in particular have no tile-and-a-half, which means cuts at abutments, hips and verges have to be made across multiple tiles to maintain bond. We hold a well-stocked yard of reclaimed Kent peg tiles and other traditional materials, and can source new handmade tiles from specialist Kent manufacturers where reclaimed stock isn’t available to match.
Listed and Graded Building Roofing in Kent
Kent has one of the highest concentrations of listed buildings in England, from Grade I medieval churches to Grade II farmhouses and cottages throughout the Weald. Where a property is listed, roofing work needs to use appropriate traditional materials including hydraulic lime mortar rather than cement, aluminium fixings rather than galvanised, and reclaimed or genuinely traditional tiles, and for most significant works, Listed Building Consent.

Oast House Roofing
The conical kiln roof of an oast house is one of the most specialist roofing challenges in Kent. Standard peg tiles don’t work on a cone, the geometry demands purpose-made oast taper tiles, laid by someone who knows exactly what they’re doing.
At Thorn Oast in Tonbridge, we carried out a full restoration of a dangerously underperforming peg tile roof on a square kiln. We replaced the old non-breathable felt with a modern breathable membrane, installed correctly specified tanalised battens, and re-laid the tiles with aluminium fixings throughout.
